Earth Magnetic Field Map

Earth Magnetic Field Map

Due to the changing main field from the earth's core, and due to differences in quality and coverage, combining these data to a consistent global magnetic grid is challenging. The map shows variations in earth's surface magnetism caused by varying concentrations of magnetic rocks and minerals in the earth's uppermost solid rock layer, known as the lithosphere. Its angle relative to true north is the declination (d) or variation.

Global vertical anomaly map (ravat et al., 1995) the magnetic anomalies seen on this map are caused by regional variations in the bulk magnetic properties of the earth's crust.

The magnetic north pole is where the earth's magnetic field points vertically downward. Global vertical anomaly map (ravat et al., 1995) the magnetic anomalies seen on this map are caused by regional variations in the bulk magnetic properties of the earth's crust. When the tectonic plates form along the oceanic ridges, the magnetic field that exists is "frozen" into the rock as they cool below about 700°c.
